Alexa Carlin, founder of Women Empower Expo (WEX), started her first business in high school, fell in love with entrepreneurship and now helps women entrepreneurs follow their dream as well.
"In high school, I designed jewelry for an L.A. based fashion company called OmniPeace," she said. "I wanted to help raise money for Omni Peace's mission to build schools in Africa. I became the sole licensee for the company as a senior in high school and built my business from my dorm room at UF. I fell in love with having an idea and turning it into reality. WEX came about because as a professional speaker I spoke to many different groups where the audience was all women and no one knew each other from the different groups. I had this idea that so much more change could occur if we could all connect so I created this one day even to create that real change as a result of connection and collaboration."
Women Empower Expo hosts events in select cities across North America with the mission to empower women with the knowledge and community to create and grow successful businesses.
"We have 54 speakers at our next event and we highlight local entrepreneurs and change leaders," Carlin explained. "We have 70 women owned businesses in the marketplace, a networking lounge, a pitch competition, and a coaching lounge. Women can set their own schedule based on where they are in their business because our speakers are arranged according to the stage your business is in."
Carlin's advice for aspiring entrepreneurs centers on faith and determination.
"Number one is trust the journey you're on," she said. "Trust the places and things you’ve learned. Everything I've done has led to what I'm doing today and who I've become. Whether it's an idea that didn’t transpire or an obstacle in the way, trust, persevere and never give up. Also, make sure to know your why. If you understand that, then nothing will stop you from pursuing what you want to pursue."
