Surviving Digitally During COVID19

As of this article’s publication in mid-July 2020, we are hopefully coming to the end of the business shutdown period for COVID-19. For the last four months, companies that our middle class has been building for decades have come to a halt overnight due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As entrepreneurs and business owners start picking up the pieces of what is left behind, it’s important to be wise on how to position ourselves so we have the best possible chance of success and finish the last six months of 2020 in the black.

After discussing with other agencies and entrepreneurs, we’ve put together a list of the 3 active things you can do right now to survive digitally during COVID-19.

Postpone Services & Offer Discounts

One thing to keep in mind is that almost every company has suffered a financial loss during the last few months. If you haven’t already, work through your overhead and budget so that when your clients, if they haven’t already, ask you to postpone services or offer discounts, you will be prepared.

One thing we have done is taken a hard look at our expenses and begun trimming some fat. We’ve taken a close look at all of our maintenance plans and calculated discounted rates or free updates we could offer each client in order to assist them where they needed and also keep us out of hot water.

If you haven’t already done so, it’s time to contact your current developer or agency and see what ongoing services you can suspend or reduce in order to save you some valuable resources.

Be Creative With Your New Message

You know your business better than anyone. While you might have a little extra downtime in the office, it might be an opportune time to start utilizing that to refresh your brand.

The way you ran your company at the beginning of 2020 is not going to be the same as how you operate it at the end of 2020. With that in mind, what marketing and website changes can you implement to position your company ahead of your competitors that are not thinking outside the box?

For instance, in our little downtime, we (Skillful Antics) have started offering clients FREE COVID-19 Updates and discounted E-Commerce updates (to help brick and mortar businesses leverage the opportunity to start selling online for in-store pickup and to compete against some of the larger companies that were not forced to shut down their businesses). This gives smaller local businesses the opportunity to reach a larger market and those not willing or able window-shop right now.

Don’t Waste Money On Higher-priced, Comparable Services

Our last observation, which might not be popular opinion among bigger agencies (sorry, guys) involves price rates. The truth is, right now you might not need a custom $50,000 website build that a smaller agency could build for $5,000. Spending $250 on a simple update that a smaller agency can complete for $100 might not be the way to go.

One thing we have noticed from negotiations with companies like Orlando Health and even small local pawn shops is that the bottom line is equally important for managing your company’s budget. Whether answering to a board of directors or your family, the dollars mean something, now more than ever.

In all things, we tend to want the biggest and the best. But a 50” 1080p TV for $400 might be just fine - perhaps you don’t actually need the $3500 8K Ultra Deluxe 6000 TV right now, and the added value does not match the exponentially large price tag. Sometimes, purchasing web design services can be analogous.

Next Steps

Don’t make the mistake of thinking all design is good design and cut a corner there, but when it comes to updating a contact form or building a rotating testimonial slider, you simply don’t need to pay a larger full-service agency $1,000 to run an estimate through the accounting department, wait a few days for it to be approved and placed into production. You can utilize an agency likes ours to make that one-hour update, within the same business day in most cases, for a tenth of the cost, which is going to benefit your business in more than one way.

If you think you might need a website update, contact us today and we’ll audit your homepage at no cost to you and give you an idea of what it will take.
