Darren Engle co-founded Multicore Photonics, Inc. with a seasoned team of industry experts and serial entrepreneurs when it was discovered that a novel fiber technology could be used to build better sensors for Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things.
"We founded Multicore in 2015 around an exclusively licensed multicore fiber (MCF) technology developed at CREOL, the College of Optics and Photonics at the University of Central Florida (one of the world’s foremost institutions for research and education in optical and photonic science and engineering)," he said. "This fiber technology (MCF) has a lower cost to manufacture, a higher operational temperature limit (1,000_degC) and a greater sensitivity both thermally and mechanically (>2x) over FBG's, we envision MCF being used for industrial sensing applications in a way that will not only disrupt FBG's and the optical sensor market but also disrupt the electrical sensor market for strain, temperature, pressure, chemical, vibration, acoustics and shape-sensing."
With over 14-years of industry experience in Energy and Oil & Gas, Engle provides strategic direction for Multicore Photonics long-term growth.
"We are the first company to offer a complete optical monitoring platform in which optic based sensors can beseamlessly integrated with electrical based legacy control systems," he explained. "This gives the owner/operator the ability to take a risk-averse, controlled approach to expanding their asset's capabilities. The more Multicore sensors installed, the more intelligent the asset/factory/refinery becomes."
Engle's advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is to connect with people across the entrepreneur ecosystem. "Become actively involved and get plugged into your environment," he said. "Actively seek, connect with and engage the people, groups and organizations that will advance your agenda. By connecting with local government organizations such as the economic development commission as well as local universities, incubators and investment groups, a clear path for your startup will be realized."
