Donna Chesteen, founder of The Tech Law Firm, is a technology lawyer who really speaks tech.
"I was a professional software engineer for 20 years before becoming an attorney so I have in-depth knowledge about software that few to no attorneys have in this area," she said. "I have potential clients discuss their product or problem and their eyes light up when they realize I know what they're talking about. One of my proudest moments was when I was able to give a client good legal advice, and then also explain the technology they could use to implement the licensing structure I had recommended."
Chesteen launched The Tech Law Firm in 2012, growing into two office locations in 2017. One office is located inside the Catalyst coworking space and the other is in Canvs coworking.
"We help technology entrepreneurs and innovators, mainly with contract needs, from business formation all the way through their business lifecycle," she explained. "For all the contracts they need drafted or reviewed, we have the expertise to help them with that."
Chesteen discovered her love for the law during a business law class as part of her MBA. She mentioned to a friend that if she were younger, she would go to law school. That friend told her that he did not think she would ever think she was too old for anything. That's all the encouragement she needed and applied to law schools as quickly as she could.
Chesteen's advice for aspiring entrepreneurs is to persist in the face of disappointing progress.
"Don't give up," she said. "It's been a lot harder than I expected it to be. I left a very good career to make what I thought was a lateral move, but I'm just now getting back to where I was professionally. Don't lose the faith. If you really believe in what you're doing, then don’t lose sight of your dreams. Continue working toward it and eventually it will come together."
