Dr. Judepatricks Onyema founded the online healthcare portal 042Clinic to most efficiently connect patients with healthcare providers, dedicating the company to his 11-year-old niece, Judith Ugwu (1996-2007).
"The last straw that pushed me to launch this business was the death of my niece from malaria," Dr. Onyema explained. "She was never seen by a physician when she became sick. She was taken to the hospital and was only seen by a nurse, who recommended outpatient anti-malarial medications for the most dangerous form of malaria even though she likely had a drug resistant strain and required hospitalization as well as specialist care."
Dr. Onyema had been contemplating healthcare inefficiencies for some time before launching 042Clinic, having researched health care waste and patient no-shows during his time as a resident physician. He also credits a Harvard University training on patient-centered computing with giving him the confidence to launch 042Clinic.
"We are a world-wide patient portal system," he said. "Most patient portals are highly localized with minimal portability. If you use another patient portal with your doctor and happen to change doctors or need care in a different location, your current portal usually cannot be used by the new healthcare provider. 042Clinic healthcare portal follows patients everywhere they go. You take your information wherever you go and grant access to which ever provider you want."
Other features include social media architecture that allows users to interact with each other securely via free international phone calls, text messages and video chat in addition to secure messaging, group meetings and public discussion boards which are all free. The portal also allows users to make doctors' appointments online, directly communicate with their healthcare providers, submit prescriptions online, and receive laboratory and diagnostic imaging results online.
