Jay Wheeler, founder of Underground Refuse Systems, immediately knew he wanted to launch a business around the concept of underground refuse as soon as he learned about it.
"I saw a video about this technology in 2014 and thought it was a billion-dollar business in the US," he said. "It's in use all over the world but new to the US. I interviewed every company in the world that does this and got exclusive rights to the company that holds the patents. I deal directly with the owner, not a director."
Underground Refuse Systems makes and sells next generation waste collection devices.
"Traditional solid waste services don't want people to know they have a choice," Wheeler explained. "My system is animal and people proof. It gets dumpsters out of parking lots. They look better. You can put ads on it. You can wrap them. They are graffiti-proof. They don’t leach into the groundwater and are suitable for locations with a high water table."
Wheeler's advice for aspiring entrepreneurs is multi-pronged.
"Believe in what you're doing," he said. "Don't start a business under the premise that you're looking for an exit. Start under the premise that this is what you're going to do and have something you can turn a profit at. Don’t get caught up in the internet. Everyone has a web app but there's only one Amazon. If you have something good, find people you can trust for advice who know things you don’t know."
