Jim Miller, co-founder of JMX Brands, which was named one of GrowFL's Companies To Watch for 2016, always wanted to launch a business of his own. The only bump in the road was he didn't know what type of business, partly because he did not have deep domain expertise or an abiding passion for any particular industry. "I did not come into this business with any knowledge or passion about furniture," he said. "This wasn't something I set out to do. I don't have any technical expertise so our strong position in the internet furniture market is almost accidental. What I was good at was identifying market opportunities and skills people had and turning them to something that meets a need."
Miller has built his company into the largest internet retailer of Amish furniture with 35 employees that remains on a strong growth track. "We work with 150 small wood shops in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Indiana and sell directly to consumers," he said. "It's really a cottage industry where they build furniture of all sorts. It's solid wood, authentic, hand crafted, and made-to-last with a high degree of personalization and customization. We coordinate the manufacture, finishing and delivery to customers throughout the US."
Miller greatly appreciates the recognition by GrowFL as a Company To Watch. "One of the central points of our company's vision over last two years and through the next three years is an on emphasis on growth and specifically revenue growth," he said. "For us, the recognition as a Florida Company To Watch affirms and acknowledges our path toward growth. For our employees, it's a recognition that gives a nod to that."
Miller's advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is to know yourself. "Have a good self awareness of your gifts, skills and passions and be true to that as much as possible," he said. "It's important to look for differentiators and having a strong sense of self awareness helps to find the sweet spot where you have something that others don't."
