Kate Frost, founder of Kate Frost Inc., a full-service social media marketing firm, turned a job interview into a business in 2009 and hasn't looked back.
"I was looking to get away from automotive business development and add some flexibility to my days when a connection recommended I interview at Daytona Toyota for a digital marketing position," she said. "They said they couldn't afford me full time and asked how much I would charge them to develop their website and social media marketing on a part time basis. We agreed on a number and that was the beginning of my company."
Frost works primarily with two main client segments, auto dealers and beauty brands.
"We provide a full-service social media solution for automotive dealers across the country, and two years ago, we started Polished Digital, which is designed for the beauty brand segment," she said. "We work with 18 beauty brands that are national and international companies. I had a pinch-me moment almost a month ago. I work with Palladio Beauty, an international brand that just got picked up by Forever 21. When I saw Forever 21 tweet and post a picture I took for Palladio, I thought that was pretty cool to see this massive brand using some of my content."
Frost's advice for aspiring entrepreneurs is to read Girl Boss by Sophia Amoruso and Blink by Malcom Gladwell. "Just jump in and get started," she said. "You can do all the planning in the world but the market speaks and customers speak, and you have to be ready to be flexible to change your idea or process and have thick skin."
