Born and raised in Connecticut, Katherine Barry, Owner of Naturally Essential LLC, moved to Fort Lauderdale immediately after high school. What was supposed to be a vacation turned into a full-time residency in the Sunshine State. After 20 years in Broward County, Barry moved up the coast in search of a smaller beach town. She and her husband spent the next 15 years in Jupiter, where she worked as a commercial real estate paralegal. When the recession hit and the bottom fell out of the real estate industry, Barry started her entrepreneurial journey and never looked back.
"At that point, I was in my late 50s," she said. "I was ready to start doing some different things. I opened a shop where I sold the work of local artists. I really enjoyed it, but after a few years, the business wasn't earning enough money. That's around the time I was introduced to Essential Oils. I enjoy natural approaches to things. I’ve never been a big fan of prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications. Essential Oils and other natural solutions are something I truly believe in."
After discovering Essential Oils, Barry launched her own business as a Wellness Advocate of the wildly popular doTERRA therapeutic grade essential oils which naturally support both physical and emotional wellness, with such benefits as boosting energy, relieving stress and improving skin conditions, among many other uses. A few years later, she and her husband relocated to New Smyrna Beach, where she continued to grow her business and also became a Certified Health Coach.
"When I took the health coaching courses and got certified, it gave me credibility," Barry said. "It allows me to talk about things, other than oils, to help people reach their wellness goals. My focus is on reducing the toxins you're exposed to everyday and promoting healthier eating and healthier daily habits. This comes down to educating people and building relationships with them."
Barry continued, "Naturally Essential provides natural, safe and effective solutions to support your health and wellness by providing education and ongoing support. I make my company unique by first caring about others, listening to their needs, and providing the best ongoing support that I possibly can."
Barry has several team members throughout the country, mainly in Volusia, Martin and Palm Beach County all working towards the same common goal. To enhance her ongoing support, she also added health and wellness related classes to her website to allow people to learn at their own pace. She plans on continuing to add new classes.
In terms of a growth strategy, Barry had a standing meeting at a local coffee shop every Thursday morning, but COVID-19 put a damper on that. Looking ahead, she has plans to rent a small space from another entrepreneur currently operating on Canal Street. Her goals are to expand her business throughout Southeast Volusia County and eventually the rest of Florida.
What advice does Barry have for aspiring entrepreneurs? "Keep on doing what you love," she said. "Also, believe in yourself. You're more capable than you give yourself credit for."
