Kevin McLaughlin, co-founder of Total Image Signs, LLC, is an entrepreneur of necessity who believes in doing things the right way first. "My wife has been an artist since she was just kid and was working in the sign industry when we had a child who was very sick at birth," he said. "We started our own business so we could work out of the house while we took care of that child. My wife worked home and I went out to do all the marketing."
Nineteen years later, Total Image Signs remains successful offering a full range of sign design and installation in addition to being very actively involved in the West Volusia Chamber of Commerce. "We do storefronts, monument signs, banners, vehicle, trailer and boat lettering, site signs, posters, magnetics and more," McLaughlin explained. "We only sell quality materials. From design to production to install, we do it all – no subbing out. We give competitive prices and we have 25 years of knowledge in the business to get the job done right the first time."
McLaughlin's advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is to be professional and make sure you have significant reserves before launching. "Years ago, you knew within one or two months if your business was going to succeed," he said. "Now you need eight to nine months of savings to last you while you grow the business to profitability. On top of that, you have to be honest and likeable. If something goes wrong, correct it right away. Don't make clients wait on it. If you do that, they will like you forever."
