Since earning her Associates Degree in Paralegal Studies, Kristy Nelson, Founder of EGS Management Consult, Inc., has worked as a paralegal. In 2011, she obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Pre-Law Studies and continued to gain valuable experience working for various South Florida law firms.
After attending an orientation session for a graduate school business program, Ms. Nelson was blown away. When she finished college, she originally thought she wanted to go to law school. As Ms. Nelson puts it, "I decided to become an entrepreneur instead."
About 2014, Ms. Nelson enrolled in Nova Southeastern University's Master of Business Administration program, with the core studies in Entrepreneurship. Much of Ms. Nelson's motivation for launching her own business came from her experience in graduate school.
"As I started grad school, I realized just how many small businesses needed more attention," she said. "I've always wanted to work with small businesses. They're the backbone of our economy and I wanted to be part of that movement. I decided to start a business that provides management consulting on daily operations, strategic planning and assistance with forming alliances for projects and support. I'm also able to incorporate my legal background into the work I do."
Ms. Nelson is targeting startups and those considering starting a business. Her services include new business development, report preparation, feasibility studies, strategic planning, operations management and business writing. She's focused on growing her business through social media and networking. She signed up with the Urban League of Broward County and has utilized the services of the South Florida Business Development Center. She's also a Brand Ambassador with Venture Cafe in Miami.
Ms. Nelson shared what excites her most about starting her business and what she hopes to accomplish in the future. "Everything about it excites me," she said. "Being in a room with other entrepreneurs and listening to their needs knowing that I have the potential to help them is extremely gratifying. My future goal is definitely to do this full-time. I'm also currently studying for my Project Management Certification."
What advice does Ms. Nelson have for aspiring entrepreneurs? "Get excited about your idea," she said. "I learned that from Barbara Corcoran of Shark Tank. That will get other people excited about your idea to spread the word. Also, realize that you need to be flexible. Things aren't always going to go as planned."
