Patricia De La Ossa, founder of Physical Therapy Lymphatic & Wellness Center, decided to become an entrepreneur so she could have the flexibility to care for her autistic daughter. She began her entrepreneurship journey in 2006 and was recognized by the Hispanic Business Initiative Fund as one of their 2016 Success Stories. With 16 employees, De La Ossa's company offers an integrated holistic approach to offer physical therapy and lymphatic treatment. "I integrate my treatment with a strong mind/body approach because it is all connected," she said "In addition, I educate clients on the benefits of nutrition and methodologies like tai chi. I incorporate all that into my treatments to help my clients overcome their illnesses and injuries."
De La Ossa did not start her entrepreneurship journey by opening a clinic but instead bootstrapped the business in the early days using a low overhead model. "I started the company when my daughter was diagnosed with autism at the age of three," she said. "I needed flexibility my supervisor would not give me so I became an independent contractor with home health care companies. Then I added staff to do the treatments and I would keep a portion of the payments. My dining room was the office and paper was everywhere."
De La Ossa is grateful for the assistance that the Hispanic Business Initiative Fund provided to her with her business plan, QuickBooks, marketing strategies and website redesign. Her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is to follow your passion. "You have to have the passion and desire inside of you and be disciplined," she said. "You can't go into it thinking just because you opened your business that you will work less. Everything is possible in life once you set your mind to it. Obstacles will come but there is always a reason for everything."
