Originally established by Dr. Bruce Landon, recently voted #1 of Tampa Bay’s top Plastic Surgeons, The Spa Boutique & Aesthetics of Trinity experienced a change of ownership in February 2018 when husband and wife, Chad and Stamie Carter purchased the business. The Carter’s shared the story behind their journey, including past experience, growth strategies and how The Spa Boutique & Aesthetics distinguishes itself from other medical spas in Pasco County.
“Stamie started with Dr. Landon about eight years ago,” Chad said. “She worked the front desk on both sides of the business – the spa side and the plastic surgery side. She always did an amazing job helping run the office. Two years ago the practice expanded significantly and Dr. Landon needed additional space to bring on new surgeons. The space that the spa was utilizing became needed and the decision was made to close that side of the business. When Stamie told me what was going on, I immediately saw it as a great opportunity for us. I approached Dr. Landon about taking over the spa and he gave us his full support.”
Going into this new opportunity, Chad previously owned a business in the healthcare industry and partially knew what to expect. His business, Tampa Bay Urodynamics, specializing in Urodynamic Testing & Pelvic Floor Rehab, taught patients dealing with incontinence how to properly do Kegel exercises. Before that, he marketed MRI and CT Scan machines to medical providers. With their combined experience, Stamie and Chad were more than qualified to take on the challenge of owning and operating a medical spa.
“Our number one action item after taking over as owners was finding a new location,” Chad said. “We went through two to three different places that fell through last minute before finding the building we’re in now. We were able to secure a loan through Pasco County Economic Development’s Microloan Program. That helped to build this place.” Stamie Added, “We demoed the entire space. We did everything from the floor up. We were also able to buy new equipment.”
Before the Carter’s took over the business, The Spa Boutique, as it was originally called, their main focus was facials. As Chad explained, the goal for the business, moving forward, was to add more corrective treatments. Chad and Stamie found there were many missed opportunities to create a true medical spa where patients could get treatments using the latest technology, including body contouring, skin rejuvenation, body shaping and injectables. "We were able to retain highly skilled Medical Aesthetician’s and a nurse practitioner with an extensive background with injectables," Chad said. "With these skilled practitioners, we were able to add the latest technology and most corrective treatments to our practice.
We have a highly effective procedure called UltraShape Power, which utilizes high frequency ultrasound to destroy fat cells without side effects. It’s also the first and only technology that is FDA cleared for non-invasive body shaping. We also added VelaShape III, a non-invasive body contouring that’s clinically proven to reduce the appearance of cellulite.”
The Spa Boutique provides corrective skin care through the use of the latest technologically advanced equipment and medical grade and prescription strength products for use during the procedures. These products can also be used at home as directed by their Medical Aesthetician's and nurse practitioner.
For Chad and Stamie, the hardest part, in the beginning, was learning how to run a business with policies and procedures and marketing directly to consumers, as opposed to providers. However, as Chad shared, there are a few things that help The Spa Boutique & Aesthetics of Trinity to stand out from the competition.
“First of all, there’s nothing similar within the county,” he said. “We also focus on doing a few things exceptionally well. Some of our competitors try to do everything. Also, when you walk into our spa, you just feel at home. It’s a serene environment where clients are able to decompress from the day and enjoy some wine and cheese after treatment. It’s really a gorgeous place. Unlike most medical spas that look like your standard medical office. Here, you can get the best of both worlds - corrective treatments and a Spa like atmosphere."
Chad and Stamie are both motivated by serving their clients. They love nothing more than seeing their clients leave happy and feeling great about their skin, body appearance and overall health.
Looking ahead, Chad and Stamie are focused on staying the course and growing their business. They’re specifically focused on recurring clients and ensuring that everyone leaves feeling happy and beautiful. They’ve also considered the possibility of future expansion should demand warrant such a move.
Chad offers some great advice for aspiring entrepreneurs. “Identify opportunities and capitalize on them,” he said. “Believe in yourself and don't always count on others. You also need to put in the time in order to be successful. Most people just see the tip of the ice berg. They don't see all the hard work that went into creating the business. Lastly, as an entrepreneur, you don’t know what you don’t know. Take advantage of local resources and get plugged in. That includes getting to know your local economic development council. Pasco County EDC helped us with a CPA, funding and other resources. That relationship was key to our growth.”
